From the NLMCC website: The NLMCC Sure Start Service offers a range of services to local children aged 4 and under, and their mothers. Men are strictly forbidden to enter Sure Start project areas within the NLMCC in accordance to Islamic practice. The service is primarily limited to families living within a small ‘Sure Start Triangle’ area, with Cazenove Road as the boundary to the south, Stamford Hill main road as the western boundary and Clapton Common as the Eastern boundary (forming a triangle as the last two boundaries meet at Stamford Hill junction). However, this boundary may soon change. If you are not sure if you qualify as a Sure Start family call the NLMCC Sure Start Office on 020 8806 9649.

At the heart of our service is the Mother and Toddler Group. This runs from 10.30am to 12pm and then 1pm to 4pm on Mondays, and 9.15am to 12pm and then 1pm to 4pm on Tuesdays to Thursdays from the NLMCC Hall. When initial research was carried out by the NLMCC on the needs of local Muslim mothers through direct surveys and questionnaires, this was the service that was requested most. It was the first service offered by the NLMCC Sure Start Service and is still by far our most popular. A recent addition is the ‘Respite for Everyone’ service. This allows mothers to leave their children at the Playgroup, for any reason whatsoever (even to simply take a break at home child-free!) once or twice a month for a morning or afternoon session.

We are currently rolling out a range of short courses for mothers. Sewing (two sessions per week) and baby massage classes (one session per week) currently run, and Child Life Saving, IT and First Aid classes will soon be added.

Our Playschemes are already very popular with places filling as soon as forms are issued, and our Eid events too are fun-packed busy days for children and mothers. We are currently working on organising an Advice Service for mothers for any problems they have for one session per week, and also want to offer an Outreach Service so that we can visit mothers at home and assist them. We are also currently purchasing items to offer a childcare related audio and video library.

Our services are shaped for you. We encourage suggestions and ideas from our users - input from users is an essential element of our Sure Start service. An anonymous suggestion box is placed in the Hall, you are also welcome to approach staff with ideas
